How ready are you for an emergency?
According to a recent American Red Cross study, most Americans aren't well prepared to respond to a disaster situation.  Nearly half of those taking part in the survey note they've put together an emergency kit to help them get through a disaster.  Forty-five-percent say they have a disaster plan that includes having an out-of-town contact.  However, fewer than a quarter of those with a plan have done a practice run, and the Red Cross says only about 12-percent of those polled are truly prepared to take action in the event of an emergency.  In an effort to help people become better prepared for a disaster situation the Red Cross has teamed up with Clorox for the "Do More Than Cross Your Fingers" campaign, which offers tips on compiling an emergency kit and other disaster preparedness techniques.  To learn more visit www.redcross.org/domore.

FDA says Zicam nasal spray can cause loss of smell USE ZICAM? Three of their over-the-counter cold remedy products have been linked to anosmia, or the loss of the sense of smell.  The FDA says the condition is associated with Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and the discontinued product Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size.  The loss of smell from using the medications can be long-term or permanent.  According to the FDA, more than 130 reports of anosmia have been linked to the Zicam items.  Many who experienced loss of smell say it occurred with the first dose of the product, while others report it took place after multiple uses.  A warning letter has been issued to the maker of Zicam cold remedies saying they cannot be marketed without the approval of the FDA.

As a motorist or a passenger, there are some steps to become more aware of motorcyclists.

Respect the motorcyclist:
Remember the motorcycle is a vehicle with all of the privileges of any vehicle on the roadway. Give the motorcyclist a full lane of travel.

Look out:
Look for the motorcyclist on the highway, at intersections, when a motorcyclist may be making a left turn, and when a motorcyclist may be changing lanes. Clearly signal your intentions.

Anticipate a motorcyclist's maneuver:
Obstructions (debris, potholes, etc.) that you may ignore or not notice can be deadly for a motorcyclist. Predict evasive actions.

Allow plenty of space:
Don't follow a motorcycle too closely. Allow enough room for the motorcyclist to take evasive actions.

NEW: Researchers have made a discovery that offers hope for developing treatments for autism.  They've found that most people suffering with the ailment share a genetic variation in a portion of their DNA that affects the way brain cells connect with each other.  The research is published in the journal "Nature."

Adult Community Autism Program

Keystone Autism Services and the Bureau of Autism Services have developed and implemented the Adult Community Autism Program (ACAP) to support adults with autism spectrum disorders.

Serving up to 200 adults in Dauphin, Lancaster and Cumberland Counties, ACAP provides comprehensive and integrative services, including health care, vocational, recreational, behavioral and social services. Individually tailored to each person’s strengths, needs and preferences, services assist individuals to lead meaningful lives in the community. Using a team approach, our clinicians and community support professionals will develop and arrange supports based on each person’s Individual Support Plan (ISP).

To participate in ACAP, individuals must meet the eligibility requirements. Individuals interested in ACAP should enroll with the Bureau of Autism Services, and they will receive services in the order they were enrolled in the program.

ACAP and Keystone Autism Services are a culmination of Keystone’s commitment to supporting individuals and families with autism.

CARTRIDGES 4 CANINES

Reduce your office clutter and turn your trash into treasure by participating in Cartridges 4 Canines, a fundraising initiative to benefit Susquehanna Service Dogs. The Keystone Partnership is partnering with Harrisburg Copiers to launch this used ink and toner cartridge drive, which channels environmental awareness to generate financial support for the significant services provided by Susquehanna Service Dogs. Individuals and companies in Central Pennsylvania can arrange for regular collection of their used inkjet and toner cartridges by Harrisburg Copiers or other Keystone volunteers, and all proceeds from the recycled cartridges will go toward the breeding, training and placement of service, hearing and therapy dogs for children and adults with disabilities.
